Ancient Tower of the Ages by Indigo76 Ancient Tower of the Ages by Indigo76
During a trip to Mono Lake, CA
:iconseptsky: and I got together at 5am to snap some sunrise shots of Mono Lake at a place called "South Tufa Beach".
The lake is approx. 1 million years old and those towers of rock are called 'Tufa' and are made of Limestone.
No fish live in this lake because of how caustic the water is, but there is one life form that thrives there besides the bacteria.
Trillions of Brine Shrimp which feed millions of migrating birds.
there is a very unique eco system at work here.
If you wish to read the blog for more info on this lake, just visit the blog here:
Mono Lake, “An alien world 1 million years in the making”

This is 3 shot HDR with a star lapse composite for the sky.
Shot with my Canon 20D and a Canon 17-40mm f/4.0 Wideangle lens.

You're welcome :)

Star trails can be addictive--be careful! :wow: I've found some new techniques since I started taking them. I haven't tried them yet, but I will soon. I see some folks taking a base image of say 3 minutes and then taking 60-70 additional 30 second exposures and stacking them rather than one super-long exposure and I've seen other folks taking a series of 2-3 minute exposures and stacking them. I've got a link for the image stacking software if you want it :iconthumbplz:

Great shot! If you can tell, how did you get the sky to do that. How long did you have your camera on the bulb setting, or is that post work in the studio? Great work!

Thanks Nathan! =D
It's actually both ;P
The exposure is from a 45 minute star lapse from the night before(it's posted on my blog)
I wanted to take it into this photo to see if I could make it look as close to real(or surreal)
as possible, and "viola!" it worked! =D
Just a simple masked composite with the screen filter on ;)

"Cheers!":ahoy:

Awesome, I am assuming you use Photoshop for something like that, I have it but need to learn how to use it. I am more of an Illustrator man!

Oh man I love illustrator! =D
But yes, Photoshop does have some very powerful features
if you know how to manipulate them ;P
It's funny cause my Illustrator teacher would always hate photoshop,
he would call it "Photoslop"...:lmao:
It's just the whole Vector Vs. Rasterized thing.
I agree that vector is always better for resizing, but there are some things
that only photoshop can do ;)

WOW! I absolutely love it! (And oh am I envious of you, I've tried to take proper star trails now with my camera and it somehow never seems to work... How many minutes did you have to have the shutter open?)
Reply
:iconindigo76:

Thank you Eoghan! =D
I had to leave my shutter open for 45 minutes.
I also had the internal "noise reduction" on which
makes the processing time a nightmare, but worth it in the end ;P

You're welcome Indy!

45 minutes, okay, sounds good - I'll be going up at 4 tomorrow in order to try some shots myself, we'll have to wait and see if my attempts finally turn out to be successful :D

Also try to point your camera toward Polaris(North Star)
if you want a perfect circle of star trails! ;P

So much for being up early, there's a forest fire on the other side of the lake so the sky was covered with smoke  But I got some decent dawn photos yesterday, so I'm happy about those :D
